Review: Blood Moon by Alyxandra Harvey

My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

Source: Library

Synopsis from Goodreads:
"I can still smell his blood, Lucy. I can smell it everywhere. It's in the grass, in the air, on me. I'm not safe."

When the vampire tribes convene for the rare Blood Moon ceremonies, Solange Drake is plunged into a battle with her feral nature. The Drake brothers have been raised knowing they had to protect their younger sister at all cost. But forbidden magic and a mysterious stranger have put all of them in terrible danger.
Nicholas is going to have to make a difficult choice: between his girlfriend, Lucy, and his little sister, Solange - blood or love?

Book 5 in the Drake Chronicles series

I love the fun and quirkiness of this series, and by this one- book 5 in the series- reading it feels like reconnecting with familiar old friends again. It's been a while since I read book 4 but still, once I picked up Blood Moon everything clicked into place again and felt like slipping into a comfortable old slipper.

It seems that all the characters from earlier books play a part in this story. We have Logan's girlfriend Isabeau doing whatever she can to help, Quinn's girlfriend Hunter gathering information from the Helios Ra, and of course Lucy getting in the way, interfering and butting in with a witty quip! But all this just makes them seem like a much larger, tighter family- so much closer and more powerful, and they all look out for each other.

Can I just say how thrilled I am that Lucy is back in the series again! I absolutely love her, she is so funny and just cracks me up- and some of the earlier books without the focus on her as a major character felt a little bit flat.

The Drake brothers are also perfect characters. They are very individual- there is the geeky one, the player, and the protective big brother. But they are all very funny, good-hearted and devoted to each other and I love knowing more about each of them in each book in the series. If only they were real! *sigh*

Blood Moon is darker than previous books in the series, but keeps up a constant pace of action, danger, drama and twists. Solange has gone completely off the rails, and dangerous vampires (and rogue vampire hunters) circle ever closer.

I really like the story unfolding in alternating points of view, as we get to see different perspectives and find out facts as they happen. In this book we see from Lucy, Solange, Nicholas and Kieran- but it feels wider than that because we get an insight right into the heart of the Drake dynasty, and a good overview of what is happening with all of the characters.

If you've read this series so far then I'm pleased to say that I think that this is one of the better ones. If you haven't read them- why not?! Each book is short and quick but packed with excitement, romance, humour and danger. And it looks like book 6- Blood Prophecy is gearing up to be the most tense, dramatic and action-filled one yet. I'm fully expecting this series to end with a bang!

  1. I haven't read this series, but I love when older characters play a role in a new book. Great review and so glad you were able to step right back into the world.
